  2. Week Two Horizon Report

With the advance in technology over the past 10 years it was inevitable that books would become the next item on the road to virtualization. First we had mail then music which rolled to movies and finally books. There are some obvious advantages to electronic books that you can have 100 books on your IPAD or Kindle and it weight the same. But you also lose some things with the digital device. For example if you are out you wouldn’t think twice about sitting your book to the side and getting up to swim, get something to drink, or whatever but with the electronic device in this honest society we live in it would be gone before you finished getting up. My question is does convenience outweigh the risk of losing your device or possible your personal information or worse depending on the device. Does enveloping yourself in an electronic device really allow for the departure of human interaction? With a traditional book one may consider using the book as an ice breaker for conversation. With an electronic device you don’t know if they are reading, surfing, chatting, or looking at porn so the social interaction is actually suppressed (my opinion).
I personally like both. I travel frequently and love to have the ability to take a digital copy of text or other types of media to study on the airplane. However while developing new courses or revamping old classes the ability to have the paper text to mark up, tear up, or burn if need be  is available.

This video gives a demonstration of the next generation exoskeleton and the practical applications that can/are being achieved.

What other applications can be identified for this type of technology?
What will be the next step for the technology, possible a internal mechanical skeleton structure?

  4. Delphi and NGT Use

Have the ability to enter entertainment Virtual with 360 degree immersion be it movies, video games, or Fantasy with the ability to control all aspects of the environment.

In this thought process I would use the Delphi method as it would allow access to more inquisitive thinking of like minded individuals to provide a path forward. With the Delphi Method this would allow the forces of the human mind to develop a conventional model of what the immersion should be and how sensory perception could be integrated. Once the conceptional image has been created the working group can provide creative insightful paths to move forward to the end product.

With the Delphi Method on of the biggest advantages can be the greatest disadvantage. The working groups can see a similar goal but not be able to agree on the path to get there causing delays or worse stopping the research all together. Another disadvantage is working with a group of individuals that have relatively close backgrounds may not have the ability to look at new or different directions in which could provide the greatest benefit.

When talking collaboration both open and closed has benefit and hindrance dependent of the project in question. Closed collaboration can limit thoughts and ideas and also create a very hostile environment if there are personalities that do not play well together causing a multitude of problems. Open collaboration can provide vast amounts of ideas and perceived courses of action but the sheer number can be overwhelming and counterproductive.
